Sage
Sage Based in New Hope, Pennsylvania, the four-piece rock band, Sage, has released their self-titled debut album in April 2003. The double CD set contains eighteen tracks recorded in front of a live audience at SweetCreek studios in Pennsylvania. A double-live disc is an ambitious undertaking for any band, at any stage of its career - let alone as their debut release. However, Sage's self-titled debut shines through admirably and is worth checking out. Each disc is packed with a diverse arrangement of rock, funk, reggae and free-flowing grooves. Resolved Question: How do you diagram sentences like these?
How do you diagram these? Young Joe Crowell hands Dr. Gibbs a newspaper. Mrs. Webb served her family a hearty breakfast. Howie Newsome delivers milk to local families. Rebecca Gibbs loves money most of all. At the announcement of a new Wilder novel, buyers lined up at bookstores. That emphasis made his work very appealing to us now. Committee members were debating between that play and The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams. Then they were worrying about the cost of a musical. (more...)

Resolved Question: Did you ever get a song stuck in your head... from a book?
I read The Magic Three of Salatia by Jane Yolen ages ago and while I don't really remember what it's about, I did keep quotes from the book in a notebook for years. Some of those quotes were of two songs, and I've been singing them ever since. (I am not a musical person, mind you) This was one: Sad news there came to the king's own son Sad news to his father's throne For madam the queen had sickened and died And left them all alone. Did she leave them gifts of gold All from her dowry Nay she left them naught but love Except the magic three One is for a mighty wish So be two and three And she has left them to her son And dived below the sea. I actually sang this song to my nephew as a lullaby when he was colicky. The other one was about buttons and my friends and I used to sing it on the bus on field trips (emphasis on the butt part of buttons). Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone else out there is as nutty as that? Hee hee, Glad to see I'm not the only fruitcake in the basket... (more...)

Resolved Question: Would this be a bad idea for a UC essay prompt?
"Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are?" I'm planning on writing about DDR. For those who don't know, it's a game where you stand on a dance pad with the up, down, left, right arrows and you must step on the corresponding arrows as shown on the screen. I choose DDR because it's special to me in many ways. First of all, I love music and DDR is a game with heavy emphasis on music and rhythm. I can describe my favorite songs in great detail rich in musical vocabulary. Next, I can tie in perseverance and motivation because those are 2 things that I have found from playing the game. Lastly, I like describing scenes in an over-the-top manner so I can try doing that to really "bring" the reader to my world rather than just "tell" them about it. My only trouble is, I'm scared that writing about a game may be too informal and sophomoric. The thing is, UC prompts are twofold so for the other topic, I'm writing about the sad parts of my life and how it has affected my dreams. With this DDR prompt, I would be letting them know two different sides of me, a sad and emotional side and an exhilirating dancer side. I'm a senior now and college apps are due in 2 months. Please give serious advice. *What really changed my life though is music but I find it kind of hard to write about. It started with me picking up the violin at a public school. I wasn't very good at the violin, but i developed something even more fantastic from it. I developed the incredible ability to play things by ear. Slowly, that ability grew stronger until the point where I could clearly distinguish harmony voices between melody voices and play each on the violin. Music has got me through all my rough times because it "heals" me. This is what has TRULY affected me so should I write about it?* (more...)

Resolved Question: Do you think you can learn to write truly great lyrics or is it god-given?
I am about to embark on a new musical project with the emphasis much less on musicianship and much more on lyrics. In the past I have written some lyrics which I myself as well as reviews and listeners consider to be pretty good. However they are not consistently brilliant in the way that perhaps Morrissey's, Conner Oberst's, Jarvis Cocker's or Ben Gibbard'd lyrics are. Can one learn to be a genius lyricist by studying those of others, seeing how they are structured and what devices are used? Or is it something that is much more natural and just comes to some gifted individuals but not others? (more...)

Resolved Question: Why do so many stuck up ellitist snobs hate rap music so much?
Claiming that it's not music, not art, anti-intellectual, no talent, skill etc..... Now first of all unfortunately there are a lot of hip-hop artists out there on MTV with no talent such as soulja boy, but those of you who assume that these account for the whole of hip-hop are simply in sheer denial or ignorance. I came from a rough dysfunctional household, in a messed up working class area with pretty high crime levels. I came from a pretty musical family, and even though my parents had trouble affording it I went to cello lessons when I was 7, then I took up guitar lessons when I was 12, gave up guitar lessons pretty quickly and taught myself, taught my self how to play the piano when 16, stopped cello lessons and grades, because I hated that sh*t. Either way I came accustomed to all genres of music ? at least most. Now I listened to punk rock, classic rock, psychedelic, alternative rock, metal, hip-hop, jazz, baroque, classical or whatever, you know. I have attainted degrees and masters in the sciences, so anyone thinking just because I like hip-hop that somehow makes me an uneducated criminal is dead wrong. Music - Vocal or instrumental sounds possessing a degree of melody, harmony, or rhythm. Now not all hip-hop is about b*tches, h*es, grills, hubs, drugs, guns, money, sex and death. This was once part of ?gangsta rap? which emerged in the late 80s, which reflected the life on the streets on the backdrop of the crack epidemic in the inner cities at that time, and still takes place today. MTV simply ?commercialized? it to appeal to the masses, in a similar way to the james bond film franchise ? it?s a male fantasy, but can become very repetitive and dull after a while. Now rap itself does take a great deal of talent to perfect your: flow, rhythm, timing, consonance, assonance, metre, rhyming patterns, combined. The vocal chords are the instrument and the emphasis is on rhythm rather than melody, which is usually provided by a well crafted beat, by the producer/sound engineer. There are only a few extraordinarily talented hip-hop artists still left in the game today: Nas, Eminem, Jay-Z, Run DMC, Grandmaster Flash, Dr Dre, LL Cool J etc?... The majority of talent of rappers are dead. ?Visualizin the realism of life and actuality **** who's the baddest a person's status depends on salary And my mentality is, money orientated I'm destined to live the dream for all my peeps who never made it cause yeah, we were beginners in the hood as five percenters But somethin must of got in us cause all of us turned to sinners Now some, restin in peace and some are sittin in San Quentin Others such as myself are tryin to carry on tradition Keepin the schwepervesence street ghetto essence inside us Cause it provides us with the proper insight to guide us Even though, we know somehow we all gotta go but as long as we leavin thievin we'll be leavin with some kind of dough so, and to that day we expire and turn to vapors me and my capers-ll be somewhere stackin plenty papers Keepin it real, packin steel, gettin high Cause life's a **** and then you die? Life?s a **** - Nas ?If I could recollect before my hood days I'd sit and reminisce, n*gga and bliss on the good days I stop and stare at the younger, my heart goes to'em They tested, it was stressed that they under In our days, things changed+9 Everyone's ashamed to the youth cause the truth looks strange And for me it's reversed, we left them a world that's cursed, and it hurts cause any day they'll push the button and yall condemned like Malcolm x and Bobby Hunton, died for nothing Don't them let me get teary, the world looks dreary but when you wipe your eyes, see it clearly there's no need for you to fear me if you take your time to hear me, maybe you can learn to cheer me it ain't about black or white, cause we're human I hope we see the light before its ruined my ghetto gospel? 2pac ? Ghetto Ghospel ?It may be early to be planning this stuff Cause I'm still struggling hard to be the man, and it's tough Cause man it's been rough, but still I manage enough I've been taken advantage of, damaged and scuffed My hands have been cuffed But I don't panic and huff, frantic and puff Or plan to give up, the minute shit hits the fan it erupts I'm anteing up double or nothing, I've been trouble enough And I'm sick of struggling and suffering, see My destiny's to rest at ease, till I'm impressed and pleased With my progress, I won't settle for less than cheese I'm on a quest to seize all, my own label to call Way before my baby is able to crawl I'm too stable to fall, the pressure motivates To know I hold the weight of boulders on my shoulder blades I seen the golden gates to heaven on Earth Where they don't pull a weapon on you when you stepping on turf? Eminem ? It?s Ok Maybe if you open your mind, they?ll be less of reason to blindly hate something without truly knowing about it. Is this how you see Hip-Hop? (more...)

Resolved Question: OU vs. OCU - musical theatre degree?
I want to major in musical theatre performance, or theatre performance with an emphasis in music &i am considering getting a minor in teaching i want a good variety of techniques to use, and not a huge emphasis on classical theatre training. Someday i am hoping to move to new york I was wondering which of these colleges were best for such a degree, or if there is one you think would work better. My parents aren't going to help pay for college if i go to a conservatory though, so please dont name those. If you go to either of these colleges by any chance, what do you think about the campus life and education? (more...)

Resolved Question: Honestly now..would you think I was gay?
If I told you that: I call things "pretty". I own a copy of Rent (rock opera musical). I don't play sports. I talk with my hands a lot. I put a lot of emphasis in my speech. I can't fix a car, except the basics. I prefer to talk about things like people and what's going on in life instead of sports, cars, or girls. I love to sing and go to karaoke pretty frequently. I'm not into video games. I am into science and the discovery health channel though. I like to play chess. I shop at Old Navy and American Eagle. I love to cook. My clothes have to be clean, wrinkle free and match. I'm a big activist for equal rights and saving the environment as well as a promoter of stem cell research and I'm pro choice. ok..you gotta understand why I call certain things pretty. Actually I call them "prettiful". And it's a continuous running joke with a guy friend of mine. You gotta know my dorky nature to understand. (more...)
