The Descent (Original Unrated Cut) [Blu-ray]
The Descent (Original Unrated Cut) [Blu-ray] Claustrophobia and bloody mayhem collide in the high-adrenaline horror flick The Descent. Six women (including one who lost her husband and child the year before, and one who harbors a bitter secret) spelunk in an unexplored cavern system that turns out to harbor mysterious, predatory creatures. That sums up the story, but--as with writer-director Neil Marshall's previous low-concept movie, Dog Soldiers--the plot doesn't begin to describe the riveting, stomach-lurching thrills this movie provides. The script affords the relatively unknown cast (led by Shauna Macdonald and Natalie Mendoza, both excellent) just enough room to make their characters distinct and genuine, so that when they're dropped into utmost peril our empathy is engaged as much as our fear. The dynamic direction and editing make the cavern a palpable, physical presence, even before the creepy beasts crawl out of their nooks. This is not a movie for everyone; it is extremely gruesome and will induce panic attacks in anyone with even a mild fear of closed spaces. But for anyone seeking something smarter, faster, and more wrenching than static torture-fests like Saw or Hostel, The Descent will draw you into its unsettling ooze. --Bret Fetzer

Touching the Void
Touching the Void To describe Touching the Void as a mountaineering documentary would be to do this breathtaking drama an injustice. By intercutting narration from the climbers themselves with a nail-biting reconstruction of their remarkable adventure in the Peruvian Andes, the film has the best of both genres: the authentic stamp of factual storytelling and the edge-of-the-seat tension of a dramatic movie.

In 1985, two British mountaineers, Joe Simpson and Simon Yates, embarked on a daring--arguably reckless in the extreme--attempt to climb the previously unconquered mountain Siula Grande. A mixture of overconfidence in their own abilities and underestimation of the climb's difficulties brought them to grief after the successful slog to the summit. What follows is an often harrowing account of their perilous descent.

Based on Joe Simpson's gripping book, the film boasts glorious widescreen photography of Siula Grande and its notorious glacier. Actors take the place of the two climbers for close-ups, though Simpson did return to Peru in order to reenact parts of his dreadful crawl back down the ice. The story of Simpson's almost-superhuman fortitude has become legendary in climbing circles, and even for viewers uninterested in mountaineering, Touching the Void is an astonishing slice of real-life drama, magnificently retold. --Mark Walker

The Endless Summer II
The Endless Summer II Twenty-eight years after directing the hit documentary The Endless Summer, Bruce Brown went on a similar quest with two surfers to find the perfect wave. With a bigger budget and more sophistication in the production, this sequel is even more spectacular. What is lost in innocence--which The Endless Summer was rich in--is made up for in stunning looks at pristine beaches on exotic and even unlikely (for example, Alaska) shores. --Tom Keogh

Resolved Question: Can I get into the university of buffalo?
Hi! okay I am now a HS sophomore in a very challenging, private, college prep school. Last year as a freshman I took Spanish II and Global and English Honors classes along with basic classes (algebra regents, biology regents etc., I was involved in Indoor and Outdoor track and I was on the varsity team in both seasons. I was in the school acapella singing group. I finished that year with about a 92 average I dont know the GPA conversion for that. Okay so this year is like 10x more challenging! lol okay so this year I am taking English II and Global II Honors, Spanish III, Geometry Honors, and CHEMISTRY!!!! lol (the worst science!) =D okay and I am also totally more involved than last year. I took part in my HS musical, I am on the school newspaper, my schools Broadway chorus group, Speech and Debate Club, Service club (we go to the nursing home and stuff its cool), in my schools band (we are going to DC in a few weeks and playing for the president!!!!!), music ministry where we sing at mass. I am planning on doing outdoor track and tennis this year as well. In the first quarter I pulled about a 91.5 average and this quarter I have about a 89/90 ish. Now I really want to get into UB and I know I havent taken the SATs or ACT or anything but usually I do excellent on standerdized tests. I am not quite sure what field I want to go into either but I know I want to minor in theatre- I know how excellent their drama program is. Major- I have no idea. Any suggestions? I like algebreic math, I like english, and I think science is interesting. Dislikes- global! lol but thank you so much for reading this!! also if you have any suggestions or questions- feel free =D thank you so much everybody =D (more...)

Resolved Question: I have difficult in-laws, what do I do?
As soon as I got engaged to my now husband, after dating for 8 months, my then polite in-laws turned. One of my sister in-laws is a very negative person, the only things she says are digs or judgmental statements about everything and everyone even her own family. Every choice I made about the wedding was met by disagreement by my mother-in-law, I told her we decided to get married in an outdoor large stone gazebo, and she then stood up from the dinner table and said ?What! You are not getting married in a church! Well I certainly hope you are going to baptize the children!? (FYI ? I don?t have any children and I?m not pregnant, and I am not Christian) It quickly continued down hill from there over the next year or so. I once stood up for someone when my sister-in-law was making fun of them for still living at home at the age of 28, she herself is 26. I was accused of attacking her to the point that she is uncomfortable in her own house (they love drama). Yes I spoke loudly, but I didn?t yell, what I said was ??this from someone that has never left home.? All three of his sisters, ages 29, 26, and 20, all still live at home. When we go over and visit, I try to say hello and be polite but I am ignored, except for by his father. When I talk or participate in conversation, that conversation ends quickly. I get along great with the extended family. We even have his cousins over to the house, we have a blast together. They have told my husband not to believe everything that his mother and sisters say, that they are predisposed to blowing things out of proportion. HELP! My husband feels like he has lost his family. They give him guilt trips all the time but then when he goes to visit all he gets is yelled at for not visiting enough. I don?t want to be the cause of pain to my husband. I tried to apologize in person for arguing with his sister right after it happened, tried to meet with her, talk with her, call her all were ignored. So I wrote a letter saying how I felt and that I was sorry, the letters have been used against me ever sense. I am at a loss, I usually am very open about how I feel and believe people should talk. The biggest problem is that his mother has cancer, she sometimes feels tired but she says she is responding really well to treatment and it is shrinking. My husband feels he can?t say anything because he is afraid she?ll die right then and there. I don?t think either of us should have to be emotionally abused because she is sick. She was diagnosed about 5 months before the wedding. (more...)

Resolved Question: Problem with my 2 best friends?
My 2 best friends are katie and bailey and we are in 8th grade. Lately katie has been hanging out with this other girl named rory. Rory is popular and has a bad rep. She skips class, is disrespectful to teachers, and is really mean to unpopular kids. Katie will eat lunch with her and leave bailey and I and acts like its no big deal. Today Bailey was sick and katie said she was just going to eat lunch with rory and her crowd. Soon lunch turned into outdoor time, into loitering the hallways, and then rory ditched class and snuck into our class. Bailey is getting frustrated too, but acts like she doesn't care. Bailey doesn't like to talk about her feelings. Yesterday bailey, katie and I got into this big fight about it and katie acted like it was no big deal and that she was the victim. This happened before but it was for like 3 minutes. Rory has also talked about bailey and I behind our backs. We told katie this but she insisted that rory would never do that and if she did that she was just joking. Our school doesn't have a guidance counselor, and bailey doesn't want to talk to the principal. I don't know what to do anymore. Bailey and katie have been best buds for 10 years. I just met them this year. I've never really had 'real' friends like this and I'm scared of losing katie 'to the dark side.' Bailey is more likely to not want to take any big moves because she's know katie forever. I really need help. I know this sounds like silly middle school drama, but is more than that. Please help me. Thank you ^_^ im not all that comfortable asking my mom. just an fyi. please dont ask why its complex. thx :) (more...)

Resolved Question: old dog + late nights = ?
so in a nutshell, i have a 13-year-old border collie and i don't know what to do with her. i do a bunch of stuff including band practice and i don't get home until late. generally between 7 and 8. once drama practice starts, i won't be home until 9 or 10. main problem: my dog is kinda old and has accidents if she's left inside too long. we usually just leave her outside all day and let her in when we get home. it's not a problem during the warm months, but winter is starting and she seems to have arthritis in one leg. it's getting too cold to leave her outside all day and i'm getting kinda worried about her. does anyone have any suggestions as to what i should do? and don't bother suggesting that i get rid of her. i'd rather just go ahead and clean up after her every day than get rid of her. also, an outdoor doghouse is also out of the question. my parents said no. any suggestions regarding dealing with the arthritis would be welcome too. many thanx in advance. i don't have any neighbors who can let her in and out. we used to, but they moved last year and there's nobody else we would trust with a key to the house or anything. the door that leads to the yard is glass. that means no doggie door. we already considered that. Ok. So the moive/episode was called The Outdoor Lamp. But the thing is i don't know if it is just a movie or a series. i really want to finish watching i cant seem to find it. So the story is about this girl who is blind. I guess her husband freezes himself so his eyes can be donated to her so she can see again. But the thing is she doesn't know that the donor is him. The the rest of the show i saw was how the wife and man met. The wife is half korean and japenese. They meet in a highschool class. The man is called yeungwu and the lady is hyekju or something like that. THANK YOU! (more...)

Resolved Question: What can I do for Work Experience?
I have to organise a placement as a junior employee status for one week for my work experience, by July 18th. I have my form, and we are to treat it as a job application. I think I can reach many places around my area, but my main concern is what I actually want to do. I'm not mad on Retial, or Factory work. I wouldn't want to do Hair&Beauty, because it would probably be on the phones or making coffees ! Hospitality is not my forte (cooking, housekeeping, etc.). Spotr & Leisure are a big no-no. I am not too inspired by Outdoor work or Garage work, I am not very good at that sort of thing. I like Journalism, but the local papers have been booked up. Caring for people is rewarding, but I have done a lot Childcare in the past. I like animals, but I don't want to be a Vet, and riding stables and practices are very popular around here. I have no concentration for office work. My interests include Drama/Theatre, Languages, and I like music and art but only for fun. Please help ! Hey, that was really helpful !!! (more...)
