The Mormon Question: Polygamy and Constitutional Conflict in Nineteenth-Century America
The Mormon Question: Polygamy and Constitutional Conflict in Nineteenth-Century America From the Mormon Church's public announcement of its sanction of polygamy in 1852 until its formal decision to abandon the practice in 1890, people on both sides of the "Mormon question" debated central questions of constitutional law. Did principles of religious freedom and local self-government protect Mormons' claim to a distinct, religiously based legal order? Or was polygamy, as its opponents claimed, a new form of slavery--this time for white women in Utah? And did constitutional principles dictate that democracy and true liberty were founded on separation of church and state?

As Sarah Barringer Gordon shows, the answers to these questions finally yielded an apparent victory for antipolygamists in the late nineteenth century, but only after decades of argument, litigation, and open conflict. Victory came at a price; as attention and national resources poured into Utah in the late 1870s and 1880s, antipolygamists turned more and more to coercion and punishment in the name of freedom. They also left a legacy in constitutional law and political theory that still governs our treatment of religious life: Americans are free to believe, but they may well not be free to act on their beliefs.

The Owl Question: Poems (May Swenson Poetry Award Series)
The Owl Question: Poems (May Swenson Poetry Award Series) Winner of the sixth annual May Swenson Poetry Award, The Owl Question underscores and relishes life’s transitions—from young girl to woman, from child to wife to mother, and from isolation to connection—this poet’s bright sense of abundance and awe, here expressed in finely tuned detail and refreshingly open observation, reads like a collective memory. Though private and closely held, these questionings are as familiar as our own souls, and in their transformation to poetry, Shearin has created the very "map" she wishes to guide her when she "can’t learn the world fast enough."

Open Question: REAL national championship?
this one has sucked so far, and i think its because these two teams arent deserving. Its Obvious USC is the best team in the nation, and undefeated utah earned the right to play them in the national championship. Anyone agree? yeah spud agreed, but if two teams had to play this way, its USC and Utah. Im not a USC fan, but i have watched 4 of their games, and they were amazing in everyone one. THe only other team i have watched that has dominated every game ive seen is Utah.(although both did have one game where they didnt, but i saw neither) yeah spud agreed, but if two teams had to play this way, its USC and Utah. Open Question: I Like This Mormon Guy, and Even Though I'm Conservative, I'm Not and Don't Want to Be Mormon, So....?
Do you think he'd turn me down since I'm not Mormon? We don't live out in Utah - we live in Maryland and there's a tiny Mormon community. Part of me thinks that things are more relaxed here for Mormons, but maybe not....I mean, the thing is, I'm really conservative too, but I don't know if he knows that. And what would be a good date to go on? Going for coffee is sorta out of the question, ha. I know, it's just that I'm thinking of asking him to a causal date. I just don't want to look like an idiot. Open Question: Can you tell me what you think about this story?
I found this story about a member in a local church, I am not a member of the Church. I am just wondering what people think of this. This was a paper bulletin of the church, and I typed it up. Thoughts? Mormon Missionary saved by the grace and love of Jesus Christ The Lord challenged Nephi Smith from birth. His Joseph Smith worshipping parents were so addled by idolatry that they named him after a mythical character from the Book of Mormon and after their false prophet, Joseph Smith. Smith?s parents were both missionaries of the Mormon church when they met. They were apparently so in love with each other that they married on their mission and Mrs. Smith went into labour in the Mormon Temple. At the age of 19 Smith was scheduled to go on a mission to convert people to Mormonism. He left behind his parents and his 4 girlfriends back in Moroni, Utah and set out for Topeka, Kansas. On his first day he was scheduled to go to the house of Mrs. Rutherford to tell her about the Book of Mormon. He had heard a lot about Mrs. Rutherford, about how she was very difficult to convert and how she herself had converted a few of the missionaries to Christianity. Nonetheless, Smith was determined to be the one to convert her. With his good looks, his immeasurable charm and charisma no one could resist. Before knocking on her door he said a prayer to Joseph Smith and asked him to help him to guide this woman to him. When Smith knocked on her door it was only moments before she answered. Mrs. Rutherford invited him in to talk and have tea. Smith could already see that this was going his way; he was going to convert her. They sat down for tea and he took out a Book of Mormon and was preparing to teach her about it when he saw something out of the corner of his eye. It was a King James Bible 1611 and it had the most wonderful light surrounding it. He asked Mrs. Rutherford what that was it was. She replied that it was a King James Bible, the authorised version, and not the one made up by Joseph Smith Jr. Smith could not help but ask if he could read it. He knew he shouldn?t, and that he could be excommunicated for reading it but there was a something going on inside him that would just not let it go. Of course Mrs. Rutherford gladly allowed him to read it. Smith was so moved by what he was reading that he kept on reading. By the time he finished the whole thing 12 hours had passed. He knew right then and there that he was just saved by the grace and love of Jesus Christ. First thing tomorrow he would go to his mission president and resign from the church. He would then go to the courthouse to change his name to Paul Jones. It was late now and Mrs. Rutherford had long since gone to bed. He went into the kitchen for a drink of water and there was a note addressed to him from Mrs. Rutherford. It said ?See you at Church on Sunday? along with the address of Salvation in Christ Evangelical Baptist Church. He smiled and left. He had been saved. (more...)
