GREENSPAN'S BUBBLES: THE AGE OF IGNORANCE AT THE FEDERAL RESERVE
No matter who you are-investor, trader, homeowner, 401(k) holder, or CEO-you are bound to feel the impact of Alan Greenspan's Age of Ignorance for years to come.
. .
According to MSN Money columnist William A. Fleckenstein, Greenspan's nearly 19-year career as Federal Reserve Chairman is even worse than anyone imagined. Labeled Mr. Bubble by the New York Times, Greenspan was nothing less than a serial bubble blower with a long history of bad decision-making. His famous Greenspan Put fueled the perception of a Goldilocks economy-but, as this explosive expos reveals, the bear has finally caught up with Goldilocks.
. .
Using transcripts of Greenspan's FOMC meetings as well as testimony before Congress, this eye-opening book delivers a timeline of his most devastating mistakes and weaves together the connection between every economic calamity of the past 19 years:
.
. - The stock market crash of 1987.
- The Savings And Loan crisis.
- The collapse of Long Term Capital Management.
- The tech bubble of 2000.
- The feared Y2K disaster.
- The credit bubble and real estate crisis of 2007.
.
Fleckenstein explains just how far-reaching Greenspan's mess has been flung, and presents damning evidence that contradicts the former Fed chief's public naivet concerning shifts in the market and economy. He also points to a disturbing fact, that throughout his career, Greenspan not only made costly mistakes, but made the same ones-over and over again. And not only was he never able to recognize or admit to those mistakes, he constantly rewrote his own history to justify them.
. .
Greenspan's Bubbles offers a lock-stock-and-barrel portrait of a flawed but fascinating man whose words and actions have led a whole generation astray, and whose legacy will continue to challenge us in the years ahead.

Measuring Health: A Guide to Rating Scales and Questionnaires

Worldwide economic constraints on health care systems have highlighted the importance of evidence-based medicine and evidence-based health policy. The resulting clinical trials and health services research studies require instruments to monitor the outcomes of care and the output of the health system. However, the over-abundance of competing measurement scales can make choosing a measure difficult at best. Measuring Health provides in-depth reviews of over 100 of the leading health measurement tools and serves as a guide for choosing among them.LNow in its third edition, this book provides a critical overview of the field of health measurement, with a technical introduction and discussion of the history and future directions for the field. This latest edition updates the information on each of the measures previously reviewed, and includes a complete new chapter on anxiety measurement to accompany the one on depression. It has also added new instruments to those previously reviewed in each of the chapters in the book.LChapters cover measurements of physical disability, social health, psychological well-being, anxiety, depression, mental status testing, pain, general health status and quality of life. Each chapter presents a tabular comparison of the quality of the instruments reviewed, followed by a detailed description of each method, covering its purpose and conceptual basis, its reliability and validity and, where possible, shows a copy of the actual scale. To ensure accuracy of the information, each review has been approved by the original author of each instrument or by an acknowledged expert.

Open Question: Why so much molestation?
Do you think that child molestation numbers have gone up, or is it just because so many people are capitalizing on this such as to catch a predator and the steve wilkos show. They say its to stop these people but its just for ratings. It seems every day recently I've been hearing about little kids being molested. Please give me your opinion if the numbers are going up or is it just more in the publics eyes or maybe a variation of multiple things.

Open Question: Need info on MBA and which kind to get?! First college grad in family looking for info and direction! HELP PLZ?
Okay, I know this is really, really long. But I desperately need your help. Please!
I'm the first person in my family graduate college. I'm really interested in pursuing higher (grad school) education, but I really know nothing about it and have no one to ask about it.
I complete my bachelors in Political Science at the end of next semester. I ended up majoring in it only because I'm interested in current events and one particular professor kind of encouraged me to do it. I don't regret it by any means, but given the knowledge I have today, I would have chosen a different major. If I have known anything about what majors are and what they actually mean, jobs that are available and future employment/income implications etc. I definitely would have gone with other interests I like equally, but would have been more beneficial in the long run.
SO, I'm interested in getting an MBA. Mostly because I think I'd be really good in management and have an interest in it, but also because I'm not entirely sure what I want to do when "i grow up" and it occurs to me that an MBA will open opportunities without closing others. (as opposed to a public policy degree that would leave me screwed if I hated the jobs out there that were available). Also, given the economy, it seems like a solid investment in that I'll always have job opportunities.
The problem is, I know NOTHING about getting an MBA. I don't know the best schools, or what the specializations available are. I don't know what the specializations mean in the classroom or as far as job opportunities are considered. I don't know what kind of GPA I have to have, how much it generally costs, if scholarships are available, or which are the best schools to attend. I don't know who to get recommendation letters from, or how many are expected.
Is it ok to go to the school you got your undergrad at or better to attend a new school? How important are school ratings from financial times etc? How much time should I spend in the workforce before attempting my MBA? It seems like if its too long, I might lose focus and not go back. Too soon, and I'd lose the valuable work experience that would make the degree more beneficial and easily utilized. Any information or resources you have would be helpful!
About my qualifications:
I do know I have to take the GMAT (I plan on doing this next year). By the time I graduate I should have a 3.7 GPA from Southern Methodist University. I transferred from a community college and got a scholarship (i'm hoping for some sort of financial assistance/grants/scholarship for grad school?). I have no extracurriculars as I work 3 jobs to support my mother and myself while in school without incurring thousands in debt. I'd like to stay in Dallas, or at least Texas, but I'm not 100% attached. I know that I've heard SMU (my current school) and UTD have highly rated/good MBA programs. I was also looking at a MBA program UT has in dallas (but not through UTD).
PLEASE HELP!

Resolved Question: Why is a Democratic CONTROL Congress so UNPOPULAR?
Approval of Congress' job performance is down to single digits again for the first time since early September.
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of likely voters found that only nine percent (9%) give Congress good or excellent ratings, while 54% give the legislature poor marks. Just one-out-of-50 voters (2%) think Congress is doing an excellent job.
The last time the ratings were this low was on September 9. In late November, 12% gave Congress good or excellent ratings. This is now the fifth time congressional ratings have fallen below 10% since June 1.

Resolved Question: Should websites have age ratings?
Film-style age ratings could be applied to websites to protect children from harmful content, under government proposals. Is this a good idea?
Culture Secretary Andy Burnham told the BBC he wanted clearer signposting online.
He said some content was unacceptable and new standards of decency were needed.
Mr Burnham also plans to negotiate with the US on drawing up international rules for English-language websites.
Do you agree with Andy Burnham's plans? Are such ratings in the interests of public safety? Are you worried that these proposals will curb freedom on the web?

Voting Question: Should we believe ESPN rumors, and the Media?
on the Cowboys and T.O. and maybe on Jerry Jones.
I do know that the media cannot stand the Raiders and that is why they bash Al Davis the way they do so it kind of pains me when I see Raider fans following suit and bashing Al Davis as well. I disagree with some of his decisions but I dont think it's right to bash him, call him "senile" and all that...Lane Kiffin did go public, tell the media he couldnt win with this team, bash the defense etc..
T.O. never went public with his QB or TE it was only made looked that way.
After Al Davis leaves. the ESPN world will try to get Jerry Jones out of the office as well. Why shouldnt they. He will be made look alot like Al for Coaching and ruling over coaches.
Should we believe the Media.. or is it all for the Ratings.

Resolved Question: How do you think this TV show will portray Homeland Security turns into reality TV in their actual duties ?
Ratings champion "American Idol" will face serious competition when it returns next month -the U. S. Department of Homeland Security.
"Homeland Security USA," an ABC reality series debuting Jan. 6, tracks the daily efforts of the federal workers responsible for safeguarding the nation's airports, borders, waters and anyplace else threats might arise.
While viewers see the mechanics of
agencies including Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Transportation Security Administration, absent is discussion of such hot-button issues as post-Sept. 11 security programs or immigration policies.
That's by design, said series executive producer Arnold Shapiro, whose credits include "Rescue 911" and "Big Brother."
"It doesn't have a political point of view," Shapiro said. "It's not meant to show the (department) higher-ups ... just the average men and women on the front lines protecting our country from various things illegal and dangerous."
"Homeland Security USA" has a week to win viewers before it has to face Fox's hit singing contest, back Jan. 13.
The ABC series, filmed with the department's co-operation, is a virtual travelogue in the first episode as it skips from border crossings at Blaine, Wash., and San Ysidro, Calif., to Los Angeles International Airport to a mail processing plant.
Turns out even mail has dramatic possibilities, as sharp-eyed officers pry open toys containing black-market prescription drugs and uncover an exotic and illicit food item - barbecued bats from Thailand.
The show mixes the offbeat and the serious, including drug smugglers, people trying to enter the country with doctored papers and a woman who's been shoved under a car seat in a painful, failed effort to slip into the country.
Not all goes the department's way in the 13 episodes. In one scene, guns are drawn against a man trying to drive across the U. S.-Mexico border with his family, terrifying his wife and young children, until agents discover it's a case of mistaken identity.Shapiro says he retained control over the show's creative content. The department pre-screened episodes and could ask for deletion of elements that would have revealed law-enforcement strategies, infringed on personal rights or jeopardized pending legal cases.
The series is based on Australia's popular "Border Security," which was optioned by ABC. "Homeland Security USA" is intended as entertainment without a political point of view, said Vicki Dummer, ABC's executive in charge of alternative series.
The department saw the show "as a great opportunity to help the American public understand what their government does and what the Department of Homeland Security, the youngest department, does," said department spokesman Ed Fox.
But "Homeland Security USA" has provoked debate sight unseen. A Facebook page opposing the series drew more than 500 postings within its first few days. Many were negative, including denunciations of the show as government propaganda.http://www.niagarafallsreview.ca/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=1361715
