To the Finland Station (New York Review Books Classics)
To the Finland Station (New York Review Books Classics) To the Finald Station is one of the greatest works by 20th-century America’s heralded man of letters. This magisterial study of the revolutionary dream reaches from the French Revolution through the Paris Commune to Russia in 1917, and features brilliant portraits of such figures as Jules Michelet, the great historian of the French people; the utopians Robert Owen and Charles Fourier; the anarchist Mikhail Bakunin; and of course Marx, Engels, Lenin, and Trotsky. Combining his polymathic talents as critic, journalist, historian, and novelist, Edmund Wilson offers an incisive and enduring tribute to the resilience, depth, and passion of the modern culture of protest.

Edmund Wilson: Literary Essays and Reviews of the 1930s & 40s: The Triple Thinkers, The Wound and the Bow, Classics and Commercials, Uncollected Reviews (Library of America #177)
Edmund Wilson: Literary Essays and Reviews of the 1930s & 40s: The Triple Thinkers, The Wound and the Bow, Classics and Commercials, Uncollected Reviews (Library of America #177) Edmund Wilson was the dominant American literary critic from the 1920s until his death in 1972, but he was also far more than that: a chronicler of his times, a historian of ideas, a probing observer of himself and of the society around him. With this volume and a companion volume devoted to the 30s and 40s--the first two entries in what will be a series devoted to Wilson's work--The Library of America pays tribute to the writer who first conceived the idea of a publishing series dedicated to "bringing out in a complete and compact form the principal American classics."

Literary Essays and Reviews of the 1930s and 40s gives us Wilson at the midpoint of his extraordinary career as critic and scholar, and includes in complete form three of his most significant books. The Triple Thinkers (1938, revised 1948) and The Wound and the Bow (1941) give us Wilson at the height of his powers, in a series of extended literary studies marked by his unique combination of criticism, biographical narrative, and psychological analysis. Here are his dazzling portraits of Pushkin and Flaubert, Dickens and Henry James, Kipling and Casanova, equally sensitive to historical context and his subjects' inner lives; his scintillating reader's guide to the mysteries of Finnegans Wake and his celebrated exploration of the nature of creativity through the figure of Sophocles' wounded hero Philoctetes.

Classics and Commercials (1950) is Wilson's gathering of the best of his reviews from the 1940s, a collection that exemplifies the range and omnivorousness of his interests. In the exact and fluent prose that makes him an unfailing delight to read, Wilson takes on everything from Gogol and Tolstoy to contemporaries like James M. Cain, Katherine Anne Porter, Dorothy Parker, and William Faulkner. Whether registering his qualms about detective novels, parsing the etiquette manuals of Emily Post, or paying tribute to the comic genius of Evelyn Waugh, Wilson turns any critical occasion into the highest kind of pleasure.

The volume is completed with a selection of uncollected reviews from this period, including Wilson's observations on the work of William Maxwell, Saul Bellow, and Anais Nin.

Resolved Question: 2006 Chevrolet Equinox review?
I looked on Edmunds.com and they gave it a good review. Just wanted to hear from some who have worked on them or own one. Are they decent vehicles? Are there a lot of known problems with them? For the price they are (9,000 to 12,000) it almost sounds too good. (more...)

Open Question: Which car would be best for me to buy?
*** A LITTLE BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON ME *** My car recently broke down for good. I was not anticipating having to buy a new car so suddenly. I'm trying to pay off credit card debts and debts from college so I can finally move out of my parents' house. I don't want to spend a whole lot for a car, but I want something that will last a while and be reliable. I drive a lot (work is a 30 mi away, I work 5 days a week, doctor appt's once a week, 90 mi of driving both ways on that day including driving to work). I'm considered a high-risk driver on insurance until the end of September '09. Anything above a 2006 is too expensive to insure. I don't know much about cars and I've been hearing a lot of mixed reviews on the three I have chosen. Here are the three: *** THE THREE CARS I'M LOOKING AT *** 1. 2005 Dodge Stratus 42,000 mi $6,995 Power everything Cruise control 4 Cylinder 2. 2006 Hyundai Accent 51,279 mi $7,995 4 Cylinder 3. 2006 Chevy Cobalt LS 27,000 mi $9,000 4 Cylinder Cruise Control (I think ...) Comes with GM 100,000 mi bumper to bumper warranty with roadside assistance, etc. *** WHY I CAN'T DECIDE *** Chevy's seem to get mixed reviews. Some really like them, some think they're junk. Same for the Dodge Stratus. Some really like them (like my dad who knows a lot about cars), some don't (my boyfriend who said the Stratus was built after the Intrepid, which was built after his crappy Eagle Vision.) The Stratus also gets mixed reviews on Edmunds.com. A lot of people seem to have transmission problems with them. Accents get good reviews. Even though the Accent doesn't have the best mileage in the bunch or a warranty, the reputation makes me notice it. The awesome GM warranty on the Cobalt and the extremely low mileage is a huge threat to the other two, however, my 65-year old mentor (pretty smart guy involved in politics, economy, etc), says GM is on its way out, and while someone will inevitably buy it out, my warranty might not be any good. Does anyone have any input on this? Any suggestions for which car I should pick? /*** RESPONSE **/ I know that Toyotas and Hondas are the best. I really want a Toyota Yaris, however, they are newer models and not only cost more, but I cannot insure them. Honda Civics, even years old and with lots of miles on them still run around $15,000 ... wayyyy too much. Same with Nissans. I have looked into them all. I don't want to spend over 9k and I don't want to get a car older than a 2005. Autotrader is where I found these three. I live in Indiana. (more...)

Resolved Question: Is the Mercedes E55 AMG good?
I am thinking about buying an E55 AMG, 2003-2004. I found some cheap ones with a good amount of mileage, 58k-71k, I'm going for the lower mileaged one. Do I need to worry about anything? i read reviews on edmunds on them, it sounds like a pretty reliable car. How often do you need everything serviced, and jw how much is the service? is the 400 dollars the service A and B? I heard it was a lot cheaper than that... (more...)

Resolved Question: Should I buy a 2001 SAAB 9-5 w/ 101k mi. for $5.5-7.5k? It's in good condition...?
I'm a die-hard SAAB lover and very concerned about the safety of vehicles. I want a super-safe car, but am limited by funds. The car looks beautiful, and has been tremendously loved by its previous owner. It has new brakes, new tires, and service records for at least the past three years. It's a 9-5 SE V6. The only reason I ask is that I'm concerned about the reliability. I've checked edmunds.com and other spots for customer reviews, and I've noticed that the reviews for the V6 have been more reliable. The engine had a moderate layer of dirt on it; but I doubt it's a sign of anything because it's from an area with mostly dirt roads. The autocheck shows it's had 4 owners, but only 20k mi. unaccounted for, and that was the second owner after it was a fleet car. Also, I was wondering, what's the best way to bargain down the price? It's $7.5k, but I'd be willing to pay $5.5k for it. They're pricing it using NADA book, which is always thousands higher than prices on edmunds. Should I just show them the edmunds price report? Anyway, thanks in advance to anyone who helps me out. (P.S.: Please, if you're just going to say basically, "SAABs suck and you shouldn't buy that crap," then don't post. I need real answers that are backed up with real data.) Just as a side note, the car is being sold private party. The guy doesn't really know much about it even though he owns it. Example: he thinks it's a German car. (more...)

Voting Question: Are consumer magazines biased against American cars?
I'm not a car enthusiast or a mechanic; but I don't understand why people complain that certain consumer magazines are biased against American cars. I also see Korean cars ranked near the bottom along with a lot of European models. Hondas have the lowest depreciation rate in the U.S. (they hold 44% of their value) and Chrysler has the highest depreciation rate in the U.S. (they hold 25% of their value). I believe the resale value has mostly to do with how well a used car is holding up and a car dealership will price their cars accordingly; it's called the free market. I also read a report from Consumer Reports a few years ago that ranked the Buick Century as the most reliable mid-size sedan. These reports are surveys of people who own the cars and they report how many problems they have had. I also go to the KBB and Edmunds websites and read car reviews so I can make an informed decision on my next purchase. From what I see from those reviews; there is more of a consensus on the reliability of Mazdas, Hondas, and Toyotas than GM makes, Hyundais (including Kia), and Volkswagen. Also, I believe that Ford is in a better position than GM and Chrysler because their cars are overall much more reliable; Chrysler is doing the worst and they make the worst American cars in general. Every make has their good and bad models; but Ford is now ranked near Toyota in reliability. I don't really see with people's actual reviews, rants and raves from people I know, and real resale values that these reports are biased. When reading Consumer Reports' 2008 study on used luxury cars, there were hundreds of comments on AOL that the study was biased. Lincoln was the only American make listed as a reliable luxury car, how many other American luxury cars are there? The only other one I can think of is Cadillac; the others they were complaining about not being listed were near luxury or premium makes. People also confuse initial quality with long-term reliability. Why would consumer magazines rank American cars high in initial quality and turn around and rank them in the middle on reliability? Not all Japanese cars are ranked highly, Nissan and Mitsubishi also have models ranked near the bottom. (more...)
