Along the Roaring River: My Wild Ride from Mao to the Met
Along the Roaring River: My Wild Ride from Mao to the Met Since his 1991 debut at New York’s Metropolitan Opera, Hao Jiang Tian has appeared on the world’s greatest stages, more than 300 times at the Met alone. How he got there is a drama of bittersweet humor, mortal danger, heartbreaking tragedy, and inspiring triumph—more passionate and turbulent than even the grandest opera. In Along the Roaring River, Tian relives his coming of age in China during the chaotic Cultural Revolution of the 1960s and 1970s and his dramatic journey from hard labor in a Beijing factory to international opera stardom.

Open Question: my new poem? comments/critique?
Choas Killed the Dinosaurs Anarchy flows in red to black to green veins. an empire based upon rivers of destruction. and now, back to game. Mama's sweet apple pie was no match for the radiowaves announcing the death of another orange pterydactyl. violence is not for the faint of heart as is rock n' roll and the dream of a t.rex whose arms extend the length of his atomic roar. Footprints are a side-effect of the force-fed media in black and white that fascilitates the process of eating meat. omnivores are overrated. And they pray to the dark and to the light and to everything that is out of reach of the brontosaurus and his stepford family, for enough change to get to Santa Fe. With nuclear lies strewn upon it, a fiery fist hurls towards the earth, chaos created the comet. And everything was perfect. (more...)

Resolved Question: How to build The Ark in Britain?
In the year 2009 the Lord came unto Noah, who was now living in England and said, ?Once again, the earth has become wicked and over populated, and I see the end of all flesh before me. Build another ark and save two of everything along with a few good humans?. He gave Noah the CAD drawings, saying, ?You have 6 months to build the Ark before I will start the unending rain for 40 days and 40 nights? Six months later, the lord looked down and saw Noah weeping in his yard but no Ark. Noah! He roared, I?m about to start the rain! Where is the Ark? ?Forgive me lord,? begged Noah, ?but things have changed. I needed Building Regulations Approval and I?ve been arguing with the Fire Brigade about the need for a sprinkler system. My neighbours claim that I should have obtained Planning Permission for building the Ark in my garden because it is a development site, even though in my view it is a temporary structure. We had to then go to appeal to the Secretary of State for a decision. The he Department of Transport demanded a bond to be posted for the future costs of moving power lines and other overhead obstructions to clear the passage for the Arks move to the sea. I told them that the sea would be coming to us but they would hear nothing of it. Getting wood was another problem. All the decent trees have Tree Preservation Orders on them and we live in a site of Special Scientific Interest set up in order to protect the spotted owl. I tried to convince the environmentalists that I needed the wood to save the owls ? but no go! When I started gathering the animals, the RSPCA sued me. They insisted that I was confining wild animals against their will. They argued the accommodation was too restrictive, and it was cruel and inhumane to put so many animals in a confined space. Then the County Council, the Environment Agency and the Rivers Authority ruled that I couldn?t build the Ark until they had conducted an environmental impact study on your proposed flood. I?m still trying to resolve a complaint with the Equal Opportunities Commission on how many disabled carpenters I?m supposed to hire for my building team. The Trades Unions say I can?t use my sons. They insist I have to hire only accredited workers with Ark building experience. To make matters worse, Customs and Excise seized all my assets, claiming I?m trying to leave the country illegally with endangered species. So, forgive me lord but it will take at least 10 years for me to finish this Ark.? Suddenly the skies cleared, the sun began to shine, and a rainbow stretched across the sky. Noah looked up in wonder and asked, ?You mean you?re not going to destroy the world?? ?No?, said the lord, ?The British Government beat me to it?. (more...)

Resolved Question: Why are people who call environmentalist "tree huggers" now are crying their eyes out over this disaster?
KINGSTON, Tenn. - A week after more than a billion gallons of coal ash broke through a retention pond dike and roared into a small river cove, the landscape has turned into a muddy pit that's little like the scenic spot that attracted people to live here. It has killed everything a resident said. Animals dead, trees dead, water destroyed and the people who built the coal plant said this would never happen. (more...)

Resolved Question: Which is a better excerpt?
I am writing a story and I would like to know which is a better quote and attracts the reader's attention more from my book. Here are the two options (if you don't think any attract attention, please inform me in a NICE way): ?The seas crashed below the strongly built pirate ship. Thunder roared high above it. Lightning stomped closer and closer. Finally, the lightning reached its destination, striking 2 million volts of electrical shock! Fortunately, the crew had abandoned the ship on time. Every one of them sailed to shore on life boats -everyone except Captain James Tom. or Something?s wrong, Carolyn thought. Carolyn?s heart pounded harder and harder as the moments passed. Something kept whispering in her ear, telling her to hide, run, anything. The feeling began to eat away at her, until, she finally brought it up. ?King Ed, I think we should hide. Right now.? Carolyn mumbled. ?Why?? ?I don?t know, I just? ? ?If you don?t know, then just be quiet.? ?But?? ?No!? Ed yelled. Just then, a squad of guards crashed the wall down. With the river behind them and the guards in front of them, Carolyn and Ed had no where left to run. They were all armed with guns and without a moment?s hesitation, they put them up and fired... And I would appreciate it if you would also comment on my synopsis, too. It is: Welcome to a dimension where most of the sorcererers of our time exist. A legend of the seas returns to life as he goes through the journey of a life time and fights through a war for the surface world. Joing foces with the under world, he battles to free the prisoners and save his world. Little does he know that the worlds and dimensions are about to interwine. And all this would be so much easier, if he wasn't a goofball! (more...)

Resolved Question: This was for my husband, written last summer-isn't it sweet?
ELEMENTALLY YOURS if you were a river and i were a tree, my thirst would be quenched by your love for me. i would see my reflection in your shimmering depths, and through all time and seasons i would never forget. If you were a stormy sky pierced through with lightening, the roar of your thunder would not be frightening; rather the echo of your magical force, heralding the rainfall of love's true source. you are my earth, my air, wind and fire, blending into that which i most desire if i were a mountain and you were the sea, you would always be reshaping me... and now i think i understand how mighty mountains turn to sand. allright jeff! enough already! lol (more...)

Resolved Question: Please finish this quote, "I see said the blind man..."?
The way I've always heard it as, "I see said the blind man to the deaf mute as they watched the roaring river in silence." However, the only one I've really been able to find for the blind man quote is, "I see, said the blind man, to his deaf dog, and he picked up his hammer and saw." Or some similar variant. Do you know anymore varieties of "I see said the blind man"? (more...)

Resolved Question: Please analyse this poem?
I don't understand this poem.If you could find out definitions of the older words, find literary devices and metaphors that would be great, Thank you! 1 West wind, blow from your prairie nest, 2 Blow from the mountains, blow from the west 3 The sail is idle, the sailor too ; 4 O! wind of the west, we wait for you. 5 Blow, blow! 6 I have wooed you so, 7 But never a favour you bestow. 8 You rock your cradle the hills between, 9 But scorn to notice my white lateen. 10 I stow the sail, unship the mast : 11 I wooed you long but my wooing's past ; 12 My paddle will lull you into rest. 13 O! drowsy wind of the drowsy west, 14 Sleep, sleep, 15 By your mountain steep, 16 Or down where the prairie grasses sweep! 17 Now fold in slumber your laggard wings, 18 For soft is the song my paddle sings. 19 August is laughing across the sky, 20 Laughing while paddle, canoe and I, 21 Drift, drift, 22 Where the hills uplift 23 On either side of the current swift. 24 The river rolls in its rocky bed ; 25 My paddle is plying its way ahead ; 26 Dip, dip, 27 While the water flip 28 In foam as over their breast we slip. 29 And oh, the river runs swifter now ; 30 The eddies circle about my bow. 31 Swirl, swirl! 32 How the ripples curl 33 In many a dangerous pool awhirl! 34 And forward far the rapids roar, 35 Fretting their margin for evermore. 36 Dash, dash, 37 With a mighty crash, 38 They seethe, and boil, and bound, and splash. 39 Be strong, O paddle! be brave, canoe! 40 The reckless waves you must plunge into. 41 Reel, reel. 42 On your trembling keel, 43 But never a fear my craft will feel. 44 We've raced the rapid, we're far ahead! 45 The river slips through its silent bed. 46 Sway, sway, 47 As the bubbles spray 48 And fall in tinkling tunes away. 49 And up on the hills against the sky, 50 A fir tree rocking its lullaby, 51 Swings, swings, 52 Its emerald wings, 53 Swelling the song that my paddle sings. This is not my poem it is by E. Pauline Johnson I have to do analyse it for school. Just making sure i didnt skip something. (more...)

Resolved Question: PLEASE read my poems! and rate them?
You need not read them all, all I ask, is you put them in order from best to worst. Bounce upon with silver light, do rays of sun upon mountains might. Broken is the silent night, as wing-ed things take to flight. Below the sun, tucked in tight, lay a forest green, all alight. Darkness cast, as a veil, upon this earth, it has failed. For sun of day, it has come, until dark of night, we see again. Pain, no more I felt, upon my skin. Numb, I was as I stared, into the unforgiving night. Golden rays of sun, felt of knives burning through, my parched, dry skin. Numb I was, though hope, it never left. And with it came anger, wishing death, to those that held us, in the deepest brink. I looked through this world, of pain that was all we knew. And fought on, to remember our past, and to hope! Hope for new life! and for cold hearts, we have from pain, to be once more whole. until we feel once more! Mountain after mountain pass I, upon a journey to touch, the bluest premises of the sky. At each break of day, continue I on this broken path, until my feet can go no more, pain of feet, I feel its wrath. Watch do I each night, laying upon the barren ground, as stars they dance and fight. My peace of mind is finally found. Peace it does not last, as night has come, and now is past. Through rolling hills I walk, morning light upon my heels, sight of yonder mountains they do mock, though soon they shall yield. The blinding sun over my now covered head, Hills that roll almost done, until the light of day is dead, and my energy is run. Lay a night again do I, though sleep does not come, I feel as though I could fly, upon the domes of the sky, for my mission it is almost done. "Winter to Spring" Multitudes of flowing white tendrils, pierce the sky, with neverending grace, and a light wind shakes. Tranquility among the snow. A chill descends, from the north, sound frozen, amidst the cold. Tranquility frozen, never moving. warmth sets upon, drives away the cold, and with it the dawn, golden upon snow. Peace begins. Glass like lakes, and drifts of snow, are melted down, it is the end. of Winter. Peace goes on. Buds shoot out, of greying brown trees, color once again. it is set free. Peace turns once more. Plants, shoot heavenwards, as if to forever leave, to the barren sky. and to peace. Finally I can sleep... Across the salty brine and winds that smell so sweet, Rises a golden sun, upon mountains you shall meet. Between these larger hills, sit valleys long and green. And flowing fast, white froths turning, a lake it does glean. It gleans the sun, as it does its daily quest. Following a single path, west. Now this lake of gold turns back once more, to a river wide, and you cant ignore, a drop, to stone below, it gives a mighty roar. Many paths they do meet, though made not by hands nor feet, come together, they do seek, the end of land, is where they seat. Until their adventures begin once more, a new land they shall explore. Ring, goes the silent clock. It may not be noise, but I do hear. As I do hear pain, as I feel. Pain that holds you, as a vice, a vice of cold steel. A vice that feels of ice, freezes off your happiness. and stangles you at night. But yay! The dawn it has arrived, and with its warmth, the grip lessens until it is no more. Your cold heart, beats once again. And love is rekindled, as once before. Love that held me, at its greatest link. and this one... Among these brambled thorns, the world it spins. But I stand still, for i am lost, I am worn. and no more do I feel pain. For I am lost to the void, in my heart. to my soul I must go, to my heart I must go again. And with that my story is told, of a lost boy, among this torn up world. or this one... Love, the heart of this world. It rains down upon you, like a storm that will not leave. It is the sun, as to the dawn. For its rays will slice, like a knife, through your heart. and you will feel gone, as though you have left, and there is no return. That the heart can conjure this feeling, to bring upon this pain, is to find that which you have not. For love cannot be my burden, as life has bestowed upon me from the start, this love keeps me hurting, hurting as a cold wind tears through my soul. A wind of ice that is the cause, of that which cannot be, the love I do feel, for you..... If you don't like this one read this.... beware it has already been posted but comment if you wish on it. Is it the wind? the tearing wind. Or is it time? to which all is lost. For the heat of the sun, warms that which i can not feel. And the night, numbs me once again. To which is love? love that breaks you? And as to love is to be hurt, walking among these stars, blind to the world? I cross (more...)

Resolved Question: What do you think it means, and do you like it? A Poem?
I just posted this but now would like to know what you THINK. Across the salty brine and winds that smell so sweet, Rises a golden sun, upon mountains you shall meet.
