Early Sound & Audio Recording in Cinema: A 1929 Max Fleischer Animation
This film about sound recording for motion pictures features the talents of animator Max Fleischer who would later go on to make Betty Boop and Popeye. This film is a great example of his transition from the simple blacks and whites that characterized his earlier works, to his 1930's animation which contained many shades of grey and more complex backgrounds. The narrator is a film strip who is trying to "find the voice" of his friend, a silent film. Their quest will reveal fascinating facts about the history of sound recording and sound editing, as well as answering the question, "how did sound get on film?" They are funny animations that make the information fun. The two film strips meet up with Dr. Western, who explains how sound was recorded back in 1920's talkies. There is footage of cameras being used in soundproof rooms and old folded horn style stage speakers. Eventually, the film strip finds his voice and the two sing "Merrily We Roll Along" together. This gem of a film is a wonderful opportunity to check out early cartoons made by one of the most famous animators of the twentieth century.

The Art of the Turnaround: Creating and Maintaining Healthy Arts Organizations
Many arts organizations today find themselves in financial difficulties because of economic constraints inherent in the industry. While other companies can improve productivity through the use of new technologies or better systems, these approaches are not available in the arts. Hamlet requires the same number of performers today as it did in Shakespeare's time. The New York Philharmonic requires the same number of musicians now as it did when Tchaikovsky conducted it over one hundred years ago. Costs go up, but the size of theaters and the price resistance of patrons limit what can be earned from ticket sales. Therefore, the performing arts industry faces a severe gap between earnings and expenses. Typical approaches to closing the gap--raising ticket prices or cutting artistic or marketing expenses--don't work.

Michael M. Kaiser has revived four major arts organizations: the Kansas City Ballet, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, American Ballet Theatre, and London's Royal Opera House. Open Question: REAL PROFESSIONAL acting help?
First I want to say that I too have seen many wanna-bees ask questions about how to become an actress. I am not like that. I have REAL experience, have REAL talent, and am SERIOUS about a career in acting (preferably theatre, not movies and TV.) How can you do that?
By the way, I have met Broadway stars (Mrs. Potts from Beauty and the Beast" and someone who was in "Les Miserables" on Broadway personally, (not with backstage passes), and have briefly met one of the past Broadway Boq from "Wicked" and they told me quite a bit about what to do, but I need a little more information.
When I say theatre I mean proffesional and eventually Broadway.
Hey 3rd answerer! I'm not sure which Poq you understudied for but, I met Ben Liebert at Starbucks before seeing the show on tour. I also met two of the ensemble cast members and they actually talked to me A LOT.

I participate in athletics, including alpine ski racing for the USSA (United States Skiing/Snowboarding Association), NYSSRA (New York State Ski Racing Association), and NASTAR.
I also have a strong passion for music and theatre. In my school, I play the role of Mae "Mama" Peterson, one of the female leads, in this year's production of Bye Bye Birdie. I have taken piano lessons for a little over a year, yet my ability has increased tremendously in the short amount of time. I took singing lessons for four years and apply my skills earned practicing piano to continually expand my range. Also within my school, I participate in the winter and spring concerts, both vocally and instrumentally.
I feel a very important part of being a good citizen would be putting in community service hours. Every Tuesday, I volunteer at the church I attend, _______, and teach first graders about our religion for an hour and a half. I am also a part of the National Junior Honor Society and put in time to discuss community service projects. Although some might say there is nothing to gain, I feel there is a sense of pride and accomplishment that comes when I help out others. I am hoping that there are others, like me, who are able to say the same.

Resolved Question: How do I get discovered? Really good singer :)?
okay, so I'm a really good singer, great even.lol
But I do a lot of talent shows, hoping to be discovered one day, but i don't know what else to do? I act in musicals, im in my school production right now. I am also in acting and improvisational theatre. But I mainly act and sing, and i'm really good at it too. Im just looking for my big break.
My mom is not really into the idea of putting your things on youtube. so I can't really do that. And she doesn't want to pay a lot of money for a talent agent. so. . .
please HELP!!!!

So I want to go to college for musical theatre
I was wondering what type of degree i could get for it at NYU
like could i get my BFA,
and the cost, and just in general how much money I would have to get loaned and if it's worth it.
(getting a loan, not going to college for musical theatre that i'm set on)
and what kind of audition they require at NYU.

Resolved Question: how can i take my acting skills to the next level?
i have been getting a lot of leads and stuff and i think community theatre isn't challenging enough for me anymore. all the new theaters i have been to aren't making me have to work hard to do well. i want to know if there are conventions where agents go or anything, so, yeah, advice and Information would be nice. thanks in advance! btw im 12 so i can't go to adult agencies or anything. oh and i can sing too. so musical theatre stuff would be nice also.
